Inclusive Classroom

A simple feedback system on classroom climate

Students sometimes hesitate to openly express discomfort or a sense of alienation they maybe experiencing that was triggered by a piece of class material, a classroom discussions or a particular classroom situation. The instructor unfortunately may be completely oblivious of this situation and thereby fail to address it. This in turn may lead to the student experiencing an even more acute sense of irrelevance and alienation over the course of the semester.

An open but anonymous feedback system linked to the class homepage (on CANVAS, Blackboard, etc) that students can use to communicate such discomfort or sense of alienation with the instructor at anytime during the semester, will help alert the instructor of unintentional alienation that a student is experiencing in the class. Such a feedback system will not only empower students, but also instructors as they can then take measures to alleviate any sense of anxiety and exclusion, and provide a safe, comfortable and inclusive class for all.

The Inclusive Hindi team has come up with a feedback form with 3 simple questions (not exclusive to Hindi) that may help an instructor improve their classroom climate and make it more inclusive, equitable and accessible. Feel free to use it in your classes:
